How Green Can One Artist Get?

3/29/2011

I was raised a thrift store shopper.   Gives a person a unique perspective on used items.
This finished piece is an example of thrifty-green-ness....

Picture
  • Here is a brand new shadow box from Goodwill.   (score!)
  • Inside is a piece of canvas from Goodwill.  ( one of the 325 squares of canvas I mentioned in a previous blog)
  • Painted with used paint
  • Painted with used brushes
  • Sealed with an acrylic sealer from a garage sale
  • Pinned in the frame with vintage upholstery tacks
  • Green Green Green! ! !

New series of square paintings

I am still working my way through the 325  - 10"X10" squares of canvas I bought at Goodwill a year or so ago.
I get on a binge and paint a series of them from time to time.
Here is the last time:

I applied to an art show under the "emerging artist" category.
They did not choose me, but said -

You have been selected as one of our alternates for Art In The Pearl 2011
So it was a nice letdown...
(I hope that somebody flakes out)

Frames Frames and more Frames

3/22/2011

I never paid attention to how many different types of frames there are.  Now that I am taking them apart and putting them back together with my paintings inside them, I am wishing there was some standardization involved.   I am SO not a mechanical fix it type person.   It has been a little challenging.  But worth it!
Picture

This had a print of two cartoon kids in a claw foot bathtub.
Big improvement!

Picture

Close-up.
I called this one - "Magic."

Picture

Neat wooden frame.
This one is called - "Dark Spring."

Picture

This one is not framed yet.
Stay tuned for an interesting framing technique for this one....

I have collected a few nice thrift store frames and today I am learning to take them apart and put in my own artwork.
I gotta say - It makes a BIG difference in how the paintings look.

I think I will head for the thrift store now to look for more!

A friend said this one looked like winter.
She was right.
I am working my way towards making 12 village paintings and then I will move on to other things....

Picture
Of course, I am still working on many other things at the same time.
I hate to be bored!

Attack of the Robots!

It kinda crept up on me - but the robots are amassing in my studio and a couple look a little mad!
Picture

This one is done.

Ghost Robot of Christmas Past

This robot is on top of an abstract painting that just somehow was not quite "done."
Done now...

I am on "vacation" from my other jobs this week and devoting my time to turning my office building/studio into an art gallery for my paintings.
I have been finishing many pieces and getting a sign made to put out front and paintings titled and priced.
Now that is what I call a vacation!
:)

How can it be that I don't know what I am thinking?

I was working on the robot painting this afternoon - still not finished - but here - have a look...

Then I was putting a clear finish on the control panel painting and I realized that the control panel was really a rocket or space ship control panel.
Of course!
I had no idea that was what I was painting until I did the NEXT painting which was the robot.

Marching marching marching

So far, I am having a good time painting this month.
I usually start out with a blank canvas and no ideas about what I am about to paint.  Sometimes I have just an inkling - but I do not draw it on the canvas or on paper - just let my mind and head and

paint colors go where they may.
Picture

I was thinking of a control panel at some big weird factory...

Picture

Painted parts of this with old ketchup squirt bottles filled with paint

Picture

Then the control panel idea reminded me of vintage-like robots.
This is not finished yet.

I am going to turn part of my office/studio into a sales gallery for my art and I pondered how to make art for different price-points.
I decided to paint a canvas and cut it up into paint stirring stick shapes.
This is my prototype.

What a hoot!
And what an affordable hoot it will be!

March Madness?

It snowed last night.   What a surprise.   Got the 6am robo-call from the school saying that school would be delayed 2 hours.
Great.  I will sleep in!
Then a text from the hubby,

telling me the same thing.
Then a text from a friend -

telling me the same thing.
Then...
The alarm system at the office/studio went haywire and kept calling.
Over and over and over.
Got out of bed - no shower (ick) and drove to the office and tried to fix the false alarms from going off every 20 seconds or so.
Finally got it fixed.
For now.
I think I will take a break from ebay and just paint the rest of the day.
I deserve it.

I have 10 of this little squares to play with today.   I staple them to a long piece of wood to work on them all at once.

Off I go!
